Sunday Afternoons

To me, Sunday afternoons should be spent in rest.  Each Sunday, I make a pot of soup to be eaten during the week. It fills the house with beautiful smells as I tinker about or nap.  I generally also try to make a few lunch box bits for the week ahead. This is in a way a form of meditation; a way to prepare for the work week and to organise not only some good food but to calm my mind. This Sunday, there is a pot of mulligatawny soup on the simmer. It has everything but the kitchen sink in it. I stewed a half part of lamb roast with onion, celery, leek, carrots with a big tin of tomatoes and water. A whole lot of aromatics including ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, peppercorns, curry spices, curry paste went in as well. Later some chickpeas, zucchini and eggplant and even later some basmati rice. It smells delicious…I like my Sunday’s. What is Sunday afternoon for you?

I only *wish* I knew what Sunday afternoons were for me. Yours sound pretty good. I’d love to get a regular pattern going.

Sunday is usually the only day Richard and I both have free. So it’s a lazy-ish day. We have coffee out, lie on the couch reading, watch a DVD or go to the movies. In between this I often do some cooking as well. Low maintenance stuff - a pot of soup, some fruit muffins or tahini bars.

Sundays were always family days. We would go to church first and then either go back home or ride our bikes or do road trips and then for dinner we always ate in the dining room with the best china. We got dressed up for the meal and shared wine, even with the kids….you know Sarah! She comes by it honestly. We trained her young. After dinner we all sat and watched Walt Disney and Murder She Wrote. Nowadays Bill and I drink the wine alone, don’t dress up much, do have music in the background and have great wonderful meals. Nice to have the wine to ourselves….hehehe
