An Irish Blessing
We are now in Dublin after finishing up our 3 day Southern Ireland tour with Paddywagon and guest traveller, Natalie. We took in the sights of Galway after a delightful Tuna Melt and half pint of Bulmers lunch. Apparently starting pints at 4pm will lead to your posse being asleep by 9.30pm. Haha. We were kept entertained by our Irish tour guide Samuel Thomas Brett. It was like being on tour with an ADD Jimoin.
The next day, we saw more castles and drove through the Burren. Our of the Spanish girls on our tour got an allergic reaction to something out there and had to be rushed to hospital. We were transferred to another bus for lunch in Doolin. Carvery - Honey glazed loin of bacon! All was well with the Spanish lassie and we met up later in Limerick. The Spanish crew back to Dublin and our smaller group continued on to Killarney. It started out as a quiet night of dinner and drinks. But a 3 for 10 euro drink special led to my eventual demise. We were introduced to the car bomb - a half pint of Guiness with a depth charger of whisky and baileys shot. After a few of these, we invented a new drink - the pussybomb - a half pint of Guiness with a strawberies and cream depth charger. It tasted like neapolitan icecream on the night. But logic should tell you that anything that curdles on the outside of the stomach is bound to curdle on the inside. Blerk. My apologies to all in room 10 at the Paddy’s Palace, Killarney. The jaunting car ride around the National Park the next day was not such a great idea.
The ride home to Dublin the next day was quiet. We stopped by the Blarney Castle to kiss the famed rock. If I kiss it twice, does that make me more likely to sprout bullshit or is it like a double negative?
We were quite glad to make it to our hotel last night. A hot shower and clean sheets restores the spirits. A few observations on Dublin since the last time I was here. The sights and sounds of new construction are everywhere. New highways, a new city light rail transport and even Doolin, the small village we visited last time has boomed with tourism with shiny new hotels and B and B’s. There seems to be an obssesion with serving mashed potatoes as little scoops of carbohydrate. The Craic is still great. O’Brien sandwiches are still there serving up good ol tuna and sweetcorn.
Onwards to Venice tomorrow for gondolas and mozarella.
