Are You Feeling Lucky?

A Sunday night in midtown Burwood is surprisingly quiet. The flickering lights of cafes, the Burwood Westfields free of shoppers and the ocassional car dragging off. We are headed to the 8.30 movie of the week session at Greater Union, with 40 minutes or so to spare, we hunt down some food on the strip. The glistening BBQ pork and duck swaying from the window of Lucky 7 catch my eye. We escape the cold night air into the warm BBQ land. The restaurant is clean and amply lit by fluroscent lights. The lady owner cheerily says hello in English and we are waved to a seat. English menus are dropped off and a pot of tea. The menu is full of stock standard good Chinese fare ranging from mixed BBQ on rice to salt and pepper calamari, hotpots and the ubiquitos laksa(though I must warn against ordering laksa in a non Malaysian Chinese place, I tend to think its asking for trouble). Colorful cardboard banners in Chinese and English advertise specials such as Spanner crab with butter and noodles or whole steamed barramundi and even two course Peking Duck.

Looking for a quick bite, we opt for noodle soups. Jason gets the BBQ pork wonton noodle soup as a litmus test and I the shredded duck and salted vegetable soup. Whilst we wait, I notice the groups around enjoying complimentary soup. We are asked if we would like some but we decline. The restaurant is very clean and the waiters polite. The lady owner runs a tight ship. Our dinner arrives. My broth is dense and tasty and is a treasure bowl of salty slices of duck, bean sprouts, salted veggies and vermicelli. Delicious. Jason pronounces his broth good, the BBQ pork substantial and wontons are moist and evenly filled with pork and prawn. We pay $16 for the pleasure and are delivered back onto Burwood road, feeling lucky we found this little establishment. A good hearty cheap dinner spot.
